Re: How do you remove honey-like "tar" from gas tank?
And to exist certain its all make clean exercise this after you complete the higher up instructions (first-class):
Wash it out with scalding hot water, then rinse with vinegar, and so water once again. Then rinse with alcohol to evaporate the water. Then peradventure a chemical tank liner, if the inside looks raunchy and flaky. And then a new in-line fuel filter.
Grade if you've got a few bucks...its much easier to retire the tank to carry fuel for your mower, chainsaws, etc. and merely go buy a new one for the gunkhole.

Re: How exercise y'all remove dearest-like "tar" from gas tank?
Probably from the gas going "bad" as it ages. Forms a varnish on the tank, fuel lines, can mess upwards your carbs or injectors. I always use a fuel addetive (ocean foam) to stablize the fuel and help forbid this from happening.

kerosene near likely will be a poorer solvent than gasoline.

Attempt some naptha or pigment thinner. But who knows what that will do to the tank. Information technology may looks fine, but later cracks will appear, then comes the leaks, then comes the Blast!

I would purchase some other 1 if you can afford it.

Well...let'south encounter.
$100-200 for a new tank.
or
$5000-10,000 for a new outboard motor.
I would purchase a new tank. Take you priced a new motor lately. Or better yet have you been to a marine mechanic lately?

Just my 3 cents worth.
Mike

Re: How do you lot remove honey-similar "tar" from gas tank?
hello
whoa dont clean or replace that tank. its nearly christmas and 1/ii my money comes from sometime gas and unsightly tanks.the gravy money comes from cleaning carbs and irresolute filters and such. the big coin comes from the motors that run with a partial brake and smoke a piston. only sometimes it will remove the crankshaft as well equally a piston. too bad I dont make coin off the parts besides.
in all seriousness, I have seen the tank problem y'all depict on many whalers. they used a carmine fiberglass tank and information technology collected stuff on the bottom. we ordinarily replace the tank with another and go along. near solvents that can really cut the goo will cut the tank also.
practiced luck and be a boater not a customer
we will encounter ya soon plenty anyway .

Re: How do you remove dearest-similar "tar" from gas tank?
Try some Xylene. Its basically paint thinner. Its already a component of most high octane gasolines (Sunoco 94). Its 117 Octane on its own and tin exist run up to 30% in a mixture of gasoline to raise its octane. Its usually used past the Turbo car crowd. Its sensor and catalytic converter safe and won't impairment rubber components like alcohol will. I run a gallon in a tank gas in my auto to clean fuel injectors once in a while. I am basically trying to tell you its safe to use. I get mine from Sherwin Williams in five gallon containers. Never purchase those picayune bottles of injector cleaner, just buy the chief ingredient, Xylene.

Cascade some in your tank, let information technology sit, I am certain it will disolve it. Don't run the disolved grime through your engine though. Gasoline is not disolving enough of information technology to damage your engine, Xylene will though. Once clean, add x% Xylene to the gas mix to clean out the carbs and stuff because if the tank looks like that, the carbs take some in there too.

Xyxlene is one part of the really stinky part of commercial caulking. Xylene is the only solvent that volition clean some types of caulking.

The other option is Toluene, same uses as Xylene, 114 Octane, as well establish in premium gasolines.

You will olfactory property the Xylene in the frazzle if you lot use it. Then you lot will be able to aroma it in high octane fuel in smaller quantities.

Xylene will probably make the plastic gas tank breakable.

Ken

Re: How do you remove beloved-like "tar" from gas tank?
I wouldn't worry virtually the tank going brittle. A few hours of Xylene won't compare to the years of gasoline exposure. Besides y'all accept always had traces of Toluene and Xylene in your gas anyhow. Bleach volition destroy your clothes but you even so do your laundry with it.

Re: How do you remove love-like "tar" from gas tank?
Traces of xylene is very different from 100% xylene.

When you lot mix solvents such as gas and xylene, their internet sovency is dependant of many things, just information technology is e'er less than the "better solvent".

I dont know if xylene would make information technology breakable, simply I wouldnt chance it.

Ken
